Installing Java 1.4.0 for Microsoft Windows Me HOWTO

Introduction

This tutorial explains how to install Java™ 2 SDK, Standard Edition 1.4.0 on the Microsoft Windows Me operating system.

Java Installation

If you do not know if your computer supports the Java 2 Platform, you can open a MS-DOS window, and type the command "java -version".

C:\WINDOWS>java -version

If the computer returns a message like:

java version "1.2.1"
Classic VM (build JDK-1.2.1-A, native threads)

C:\WINDOWS>

then your computer supports the Java 2 Platform. It is important that the Java version number returned is "1.2.1" or higher. If your computer do not support the Java 2 Platform, then you must download and install the Java Run-time Environment (JRE) from Sun Microsystems.

autoexec.bat

autoexec.bat should include a path to "j2re1.4.0".

SET PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND;C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.0

(For Windows 95, Java 1.2 developers: autoexec.bat should include "PATH C:\jdk1.2\bin")

(For Windows 95, Java 1.3 developers: autoexec.bat should include "PATH C:\jdk1.3\bin")
